Viking chess (Copenhagen rules, 11 × 11). The king and his defenders are surrounded: the defenders win if the king reaches a corner, the attackers if they capture him.

The sides

24 attackers (dark) start on the edges. The king stands on the throne in the middle with 12 defenders (light). The attackers move first, then the players take turns.

The start. The throne is in the middle, the four corners are marked.

Moving

Every piece, the king too, moves like a rook in chess: any number of empty squares across or down, never diagonally, never over other pieces.

Only the king may stop on the throne and on the four corners. Other pieces may pass over the empty throne.

An attacker can go as far as the arrows reach.

Capturing

Trap an enemy piece between two of yours, across or down: it is captured. Only the moving player captures — you may safely move in between two enemies. A corner, and the empty throne, count as one of your pieces when trapping. The king helps his defenders capture.

The attacker moves to d3: the defender on c3 is trapped between two attackers and taken.
A corner counts as the attackers' own: moving to c1 takes the defender on b1.

The shieldwall

A row of two or more pieces along the edge is captured all at once when the enemy closes both ends of the row (a corner counts) and has a piece right in front of each of them. The king in such a row is not captured.

The attacker closes the row on f1: both defenders on d1 and e1 are taken.

The king

The attackers capture the king by surrounding him on all four sides — or on three sides when he stands next to the throne, the throne being the fourth. The king cannot be captured on the edge of the board.

The fourth attacker closes the ring: the king is captured and the attackers win.
The way to a1 is free: the king escapes and the defenders win.
