Nine Men's Morris the rules

โ–ถ Play Nine Men's Morris

Place your nine stones, then move them along the lines. Three in a row โ€” a mill โ€” takes one of your opponent's stones. Leave them with two stones, or with no move, to win.

The board

Three squares inside each other, joined in the middle of each side: 24 points. Each player has nine stones. White moves first.

The 24 points. They are named like chess squares: a1 bottom left, g7 top right.

1. Placing

The players take turns placing one stone on any empty point, until all eighteen are on the board.

2. Moving

Then, on your turn, move one of your stones along a line to the next point, if it is empty. A player who cannot move loses.

The stone on a7 can go to d7 or a4.

Mills

Three of your stones in a row on one line is a mill. When you close a mill โ€” by placing or by moving โ€” take one of your opponent's stones. Stones in a mill are safe, unless all of the opponent's stones are in mills. Opening a mill and closing it again counts as a new mill.

White places on g7 and closes the top line...
...and takes a black stone.

๐Ÿ•Š Flying

If chosen for the game (it is on by default): a player who has only three stones left may move a stone to any empty point, not only along the lines. That gives the weaker side a last chance.

With three stones, white may fly to any empty point.
